Dear Adam Duritz,

I get lots of updates from various bands in my Facebook news feed each day and have been meaning to change my settings but that’s generally quite a feat and involves much head scratching and brow mopping so I haven’t yet. Anyway. I get Counting Crows news too and I realised the other day that it’s actually you that writes it! So now I read it. I didn’t before. It’s quite exciting. Have you branched out into Google+ yet? I got an invite off Steve and was thrilled but then I realised it’s simply the lovechild of Twitter and Facebook and also because it’s still in beta nobody’s on it, so I think I might just leave it while people work out how to use it properly, and then let them tell me in a few months.

I didn’t actually write to you to let you know my thoughts on social networking, although on a slightly related note have you ever seen Catfish? It’s very good! I am writing to let you know that I am in the process of beginning a collection of signed photos of bearded celebrities. You, Adam, are my favourite of all the bearded celebrities, even Jesus. You are also the first bearded celebrity I’ve written to, other than Noel Edmonds, who is on Deal or No Deal in the UK.

I am a big fan of Counting Crows. When I was 15 my friend Keef made me listen to ‘Mr Jones’ in his bedroom and I never looked back. Although I haven’t actually seen you live, on account of you don’t often come to the UK and when you do your tickets are very expensive and we’re in recession you know. But I have got every single one of your albums. One time I had them in my car and my car was stolen and when it was returned they’d stolen all my Counting Crows CDs but left me a used needle and some broken glass – it’s quite comforting to know that heroin addicts in Leeds have good taste in music. If I were a heroin addict and had just stolen someone’s entire collection of Counting Crows CDs I’d firstly nick a stereo to listen to them on and then I think I’d listen to Time and Time Again. Or maybe Have You Seen Me Lately?

So, Adam, while I appreciate you probably get a lot of post and very little time to respond to it, if you could send me a signed photo you’d be a) doing me a favour, b) restoring my faith in non-internet communications and c) well on your way to becoming the inaugural major bearded celebrity photo in my collection, which I think you’ll agree is quite an honour.

Yours sincerely,

Lucy Knight
